Leading a Double Life

Kallen Kouzuki is a Half Britannian/Half Japanese girl. She leads a double life as a sickly student and as key member of the Black Knights. At the beginning of the series Kallen is a member of an unnamed resistance group that gains control of C.C.'s capsule. Kallen has a lot of power within the resistance because she can pilot their only Knightmare, a run down old Glasgow. She uses it to lead them against the trained Britannian military. Kallen wins nearly all of her battles, she only loses when her outdated and faulty machine crashes. She is the one who aids Lelouch most during the first few episodes as he moves to defeat Clovis. Her value is proven when she stands her ground against the "White Knightmare", Lancelot. Kallen fights against Britannia in order to get revenge for herself, her brother, and her family.

During the day Kallen, spends her time as a "Britannian" student as Ashford Academy, where she meets Lelouch. Although she is suspicious about his knowledge of her participation in the rebellion she believes it dismisses the possibility of him being Zero. Kallen plays a "sickly girl" whose frequent hospitalizations force her to miss class. She is fairly popular and becomes a member of the student council because her "frail body" prevents her from joining most clubs. Kallen acts shy and naive while at school but hates every minute of it. She uses "illness" as a cover up but finds that it often does more harm than good because she is perceived being as weak and helpless.

When Kallen was a child she grew up living in a "normal family". Her father was often busy with his job however, Kallen went on many trips and spent many hours with her mother and older brother. . In 2010 a.t.b. their happy life was ruined when Japan was invaded by Britannia. Under this reorganized "Area 11" Japanese people became second class citizens or "Elevens". In order to keep up his honor and reputation, Kallen's father, a Britannia nobleman took on a new wife and gave Kallen's mother two options, leave, or work as a servant for her former husband. Kallen's mother chose to stay and watch another woman take her place as the "mother" of her children.

Any attempts to live happily in this situation ended in failure. Naoto, Kallen's older brother, hated Britannia for what they had done to Japan, and their family and began his a rebel group. Kallen was left alone, and began to see how horrible her mother's new position was. Kallen began to hate her, believing she was a weak minded woman who couldn't stand up for herself and leave a man who no longer loved her. Kallen went so far as to put stickers over her face in old photos and write death threats on the walls of her mother's tiny room in order to force her to leave. If all that wasn't enough, Naoto was killed in battle. Kallen vowed to claim revenge for him and learned to pilot a Knightmare in order to join the rebel group her brother had created.

When Kallen met Zero she began to see fighting in a different light. She began to believe in his ideals and want to be a knight for justice, instead of a knight for revenge. During one of the first missions along side Zero, Kallen and the others planned to raid a shipping company that was selling refrain, a fictional drug used cause hallucinations of the "good 'ol days". During the raid Kallen sees her mother and learned that her mother had become addicted to refrain, in order to recall a time when she could take care of Naoto and Kallen as their mother. The experience touched Kallen and made her realize how much she still loved her mother.

Kallen's mother was arrested for her use of refrain and became very sick from the side effects. Kallen was told her mother was bed ridden and probably couldn't talk, Kallen however, heard her mother say one thing in her hazy delusional state. "Hang in there, Kallen." Kallen replies "I will, I promise." and with a new resolve sets out to change the world, no longer fighting for revenge but for the future instead.
